Turkish Poğaça Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup warm milk
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon instant yeast
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg (for the dough)
  • 1 egg yolk (for brushing)
  • Filling options: feta cheese, olives, cooked minced meat, or any desired filling

Instructions:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine warm milk, warm water, instant yeast, and granulated sugar. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until foamy.

  2. Add olive oil, salt, and one beaten egg to the yeast mixture. Mix well.

  3. Gradually add the flour to the wet ingredients, mixing until a dough forms.

  4. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.

  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

  6. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  7. After the dough has risen, punch it down to release any air bubbles. Divide the dough into equal-sized portions, depending on how big you want your poğaça to be.

  8. Flatten each portion of dough with your hands, then place your desired filling in the center. Fold the edges of the dough over the filling and pinch to seal, forming a ball shape.

  9. Place the filled dough balls on the prepared baking sheet, leaving some space between each poğaça.

  10. Beat the egg yolk with a little water to make an egg wash. Brush the tops of the poğaça with the egg wash.

  11. Bake the poğaça in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top.

  12. Once baked, remove the poğaça from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your freshly baked Turkish poğaça!
